Seasonal Herbs for Seasonal Allergies

It’s been a gorgeous weekend in the Northeast, but that means some of us are playing an intense game of “is it allergies or ___?” Luckily, Mother Nature has a way of providing us with exactly what we need when we need it, (as long as we know where to look!). Three readily available herbs around the northeastern United States this time of year (and many other parts of the northern hemisphere) that have anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties and provide support for the upper respiratory system are:

  • Violets

  • Stinging nettles

  • Dead nettles (also known as Purple Nettles)

Used on a regular basis in tea or tincture form or incorporated into foods (violets can be sprinkled on salads and nettles make tasty additions to sautés or smoothies), these beauties can help ease those allergy-related itchy eyes, itchy throats and runny noses.

Each herb contains multiple properties though which can be more useful to some than others. Developing a relationship with herbs can take time, but be so rewarding in the long run. Working with a trained herbalist or nutrition consultant can help you determine what’s right for you and your unique constitution.
